The task I was given to do was to design and produce my own version of a front page newspaper and to make it as authentic as possible whilst using all my knowledge. Designing my own newspaper was very easy to-do. I used the normal conventions that I had learned from other popular newspapers was to make the headlines in large bold font with a colourful back ground font, A bold border around the main article to catch the readers eye, A simple yet eye catching logo.
When I came to create my own newspaper I had to overcome a few obstacles such as being using the correct piece of software which would allow me to create my newspaper to the best of my ability whilst making it look professional. The software that I had decided to use was ‘Microsoft Publisher’ because it was easily available and fulfilled all the tools I need to help me create it. When creating the newspaper I had to consider what it was called, the design, the logo, Price, Give a ways and prizes, the stories, the headline and how to phrase it, and its content.
My next problem that I had to overcome was what type of story I was going to use. The story lines I had decided to use was a terror attack and politics because it uses the most interest which in effect would sell more copies of the newspaper. My target audience would be the working class people (ced2)the reason on why I have made them my target audience because it would be more easy to write for and using conventions form the sun like making the main headline’s gossip and leaving only a small space for world events. I would make it colourful so it would stand out and be eye catching.
I started by creating the banner for the top of the newspaper. I included a background colour which was a faded yellow to catch the reader’s eye whilst putting a give away Prize at the top of the news paper and the newspapers title in the font 36 below it with the date a statement and the price. Once I had done that I decided to make a column down the right hand side. To do this I found an archive picture of a terrorist attack in which I could place at the top. Once I had done that I placed a background colour of blue once again to make it stand out.
Below the archive picture I placed the headline of that story in large font then below that a name of a journalist to add to the authenticity. After I had completed those tasks I then started to write the columns I had decided to use three columns because it filled the space I had allocated it. The first column consisted of the main news in this case was describing the situation, the second column went on to give extra information on the news and the third column just gave extra information that was not really required but could be dropped (‘Drop the Dead Donkey’) if more important piece of news needed to be presented.
Once I had done that I decided to add an advert on the bottom to do this I went onto google and typed in adverts in the images section and found a suitable stretched advert to go along the bottom. After I had done that I had decided to create the main article. In doing that I needed to decide what I would be on so I looked at current advents an included them the current advent that I included was that Tony Blair is leaving office soon so I made the main article on him finally leaving and Gordon brown entering.
Firstly I created a headline so I decided to call it “Tony Gives up”. The reason why I used that as a title was because it told the news in the first line and used slang to appeal to my target audience. Once I did that I collected to archive photos one of Tony Blair walking out of ten downing street and one of Gordon brown laughing I placed the below the headline and placed them side by side almost to imply that ‘ As Tony walked that Gordon Brown was laughing at him’.
Once I had done that with the space I had left I made three column’s the first one was used to say what happened and what was going on the second one was to give more information on the situation and the final one was to give the information on what was happening with Gordon brown. Creating the logo was deign was very easy for me because I used a basic logo which consisted of the name of the newspaper ‘The Daily Telegram’.
The reason why I called it the daily telegram was because the majority of popular newspapers starts with ‘The’ in it such as ‘The sun’ ,’The Guardian’ ‘The telegraph. ‘ instead of using a traditional red top banner I used yellow because yellow catches the eye more. The reason on why I called it telegram was because hundreds of years ago news was passed form city to city by telegrams.
To go along side with the logo I placed in the date in the bottom left a statement saying it was the best newspaper in the middle and the price at 0.55 in the bottom right. I priced it at i?? 0. 55 because it is cheap and would be affordable by the ced2 class also known as the working class with all that writing in font size 16 in black time’s new roman. With each article I also added a name of a journalist which would add to more authenticity of the newspaper. My main article was of course the gossip of Politics and my sub article would usually be the main article for many other news papers. The sub article only consisted on three columns and at the end it stated to turn to page 6 for more information.
The font size for the two articles where font size 16 which is consistent through out the rest of ‘The Daily Telegram’. Adding the advert was rather interesting for me because I had to find an advert which could be stretched across the page which is more commonly used on many news papers. I finally found an archive advert in google images which I paced in, the reason why I chose it was because it was brightly coloured and was advertising a chat room which would apply towards teenagers and would attract interest for the working class people.
If I had more time and better resources of programs I would have changed a few things with my newspaper such as I would have made it slightly larger than a4 so I could add more information on it. I would have also used different software such as visual effects editor which would have enabled me to create better images and logos for my front page, I would have also used more columns with better information and I would have researched more into journalistic writing techniques. Over all I am pleased with what I have produced and with the best of my abilities.
